Transforming Blackburn College's University Centre Library
The University Centre Library at Blackburn College had great potential but was underused. Previously seen as uninspiring, it needed an overhaul to align with the College’s vision of enhancing the student experience.
Recently named one of the top three colleges in England, Blackburn College wanted to ensure its facilities reflected this prestigious status.
Together, we set out to turn the library into a vibrant, engaging, and functional space – one that would attract students and stand out in a competitive academic landscape.
The goal was to revitalise the existing library and turn it into a dynamic, welcoming environment. Blackburn College wanted to:
- Boost student engagement by creating a space that inspires learning, collaboration, and social interaction.
- Increase the overall use of the library and make it a central hub on campus.
- Support their wider strategy to attract and retain students by making the campus a destination, not just a default choice.
Our Approach
Blackburn College had a clear vision, but weren’t sure how to realise it.
We took the time to understand what the college needed, gathered input from key stakeholders and combined those ideas with what was achievable within the available space. This open, collaborative approach ensured the final design hit all the right notes for students, staff, and the wider college community.
This balance allowed for practical solutions that still felt bold and modern, with thoughtful touches that encouraged students to make the most of the space.
Transformation highlights
The library’s transformation was striking. What was once an underwhelming area became a vibrant, multi-functional space that included:
- Collaborative zones: Flexible seating and group study areas that encourage interaction.
- Quiet corners: Cosy spots for focused study, catering to different preferences.
- Modern aesthetics: A fresh, contemporary design with bold patterns and colours, making the space feel inviting and dynamic.
- Enhanced facilities: Updated tech and furniture to improve comfort and convenience, supporting both traditional and digital learning.
IMMEDIATE RESULTS
The revamped library has been a hit with students and staff. Even before the official launch, foot traffic increased, and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Students love the welcoming atmosphere and variety of study spaces.
“Before the transformation, the library was a forgotten corner of the campus. Now, it’s buzzing with activity. It’s become a space where students want to be, not just a place to study,” said Steve Nunwick, Blackburn College’s Director of Facilities and Estates
Long-term impact
The redesigned library, alongside the college’s investment in a number of other areas across the campus, fits perfectly with Blackburn College’s bigger goals. By turning the library into a true destination, they hope to:
- Boost student recruitment: The new facilities have become a talking point during open days, helping to attract prospective students who see the library as a key part of their educational experience.
- Enhance student experience: The vibrant, flexible space contributes to a more engaging student life, reflecting a commitment to providing top-tier facilities.
- Strengthen brand image: The library’s transformation backs up the college’s status as one of the top three in England, reinforcing its reputation as a forward-thinking, student-centric institution.
“Our goal was to create a library that truly stands out – something that students would choose to spend time in, not just pass through. Thanks to Blueprint Interiors, we now have a space that inspires learning, collaboration, and creativity. It’s been a game-changer for our campus.”
