Team Spotlight: Kim – Head of Design

It’s time to go behind the scenes once again as we bring you another team spotlight. This month, it’s our Head of Design, Kimberly Bloor’s turn to tell you about herself, her role and her life at Blueprint Interiors.

Hi Kim, Tell us a little bit about your role

I’m Head of Design and I’ve been here just over 10 years now. I started off as a Designer and then moved to Head of Design, now managing a team of four. As well as being a project lead, I also oversee the management of the project’s assignment within the team and workload.

I work on a few projects at one time, and they’ll all be at different stages. So, it’s often a mixture of working on a project and looking at 2D plans or 3D models or going on-site visits taking a brief and seeing how they’re doing.

What has been your favourite project to be a part of?

I’ve worked on quite a few projects during my time, but I have to say our office, WorkLife Central as that’s an ongoing project. It’s where we bring all our clients and it’s great to have them in to do different exercises and pull out different information to inform their office design briefs.

WorkLife Central is a representation of us. It’s a space our team get to work in as well and I like having a say in that and making it come to life. We’re planning on re-doing it this year and changing some of the layout on the first floor so I’m looking forward to that.

What is your favourite part about working at Blueprint Interiors?

I think it’s the variety and the people, although the business has grown it still feels like a close-knit group. It’s nice because you get to know people really well and you can bounce ideas off each other.

What’s your favourite design aspect in terms of making spaces work?

I like the whole jigsaw puzzle, which is the space planning at the start and understanding what the problems are, then identifying the solutions. If there’s a big list of requirements, I enjoy moving the puzzle pieces around and solving them.

What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on so far

What is your favourite part about changing the way people work?

I think changing the environment that they’re going to be in. Covid-19 had a big part in people wanting more of the comforts of home in the office, so we’re now seeing more of a blend of domestic and commercial design styles. It’s creating a welcoming place where people want to go rather than stay at home nine to five. I enjoy creating environments that people gravitate towards, and creating a culture for the business and a nice social experience.

What’s your favourite part of the fit-out process?

Other than the design aspect, I like meeting the teams and understanding how different companies work and how they work with each other. I think that’s the beauty of our sector and working in interiors. We get to learn about different companies that are out there and what they do which is quite different and interesting.

During workshops, we use exercises to get colleagues to interact with each other. This is helpful because sometimes colleagues don’t meet due to the layout of their office. It’s great to see them interact and spark ideas.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

I think it’s teamwork. What’s great about us here at Blueprint is that we all have different skills, different backgrounds, and different experiences that we can learn from. You don’t have to have all the answers. It’s understanding that you don’t need to know everything.

You have new starters who want to learn as much as they can from you, and then I’m also still learning. There’s always going to be new technology, new products, and different ways of doing things. So, it’s an ongoing thing and it’s ok if you don’t have all the answers, that’s why we’re a team.

What’s a fun fact about you that people might not know?

I really enjoy going to concerts and seeing shows at the theatre. I’ve been to Glastonbury a few times and I look forward to when I can take my little one there too.
